Diplômé de l'Université d'État de Kazan (République du Tatarstan, Russie) avec un master en relations internationales (histoire), Ilshat Saetov a soutenu sa thèse de doctorat en sciences politiques dans la même université, y travaillant comme professeur associé de 2011 à 2013. Par la suite, il a dirigé le département de turcologie à la Bibliothèque d'État russe de littérature étrangère (Moscou) de 2013 à 2015, avant de devenir chercheur à l'Institut d'études orientales de l'Académie des sciences de Russie de 2016 à 2023. En 2022, en tant que professeur associé invité, il a dirigé un séminaire sur la réalisation de courts métrages à la Higher School of Economics (Moscou).

Ilshat a lancé et édité Islamology, revue académique dédiée aux études de l'islam et des sociétés musulmanes, publiée par la Fondation Mardjani de 2017 à 2022.

Parallèlement, Ilshat a suivi une formation professionnelle complémentaire en réalisation à l'École de cinéma de Moscou de 2018 à 2021. Il est l’auteur de plusieurs courts et moyens métrages de fiction et documentaires, ainsi que d’une pièce de théâtre dont il a assuré la mise en scène.

Actuellement chercheur au CETOBaC, Ilshat mène des recherches sur le journal ottoman-turc Medeniyet, publié en Bulgarie entre 1933 et 1944.

Ilshat Saetov est l'auteur d'un livre sur le marketing politique en Turquie et en Russie (2017) et co-auteur d'un livre sur les Jamaats musulmans (post-Sufi) dans les pays de l'Est (2021). Il a édité plusieurs ouvrages sur le Moyen-Orient et le Proche-Orient, ainsi que la traduction russe de LIslam mondialisé d’Olivier Roy.

Ses centres d'intérêt actuels comprennent les minorités nationales turques et la presse, la mythologie tatare, l'auto-ethnographie et l'impact du cinéma sur la société contemporaine.

After graduating from Kazan State University (Republic of Tatarstan, Russia) with a Master's degree in International Relations (History), Ilshat Saetov defended his PhD thesis in Political Science at the same university, worked there as an associate professor in 2011-2013, headed the Turkology department at the Russian State Library of Foreign Literature (Moscow) in 2013-2015, was a research fellow at the Institute of Oriental Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences in 2016-2023. In 2022, as an invited associate professor, he conducted a seminar on directing short films at the Higher School of Economics (Moscow).

Ilshat  launched and served as the editor of Islamology, the academic journal for Studies of Islam and Muslim Societies, published by the Mardjani Foundation from 2017 to 2022.

He  also received additional professional training in the directing program of the Moscow Film School from 2018 to 2021. He directed several short and medium-length fiction and documentary films;he also authored a play which he directed.

As a researcher at CETOBaC, he is currently conducting research on the Ottoman-Turkish newspaper Medeniyet, which was published in Bulgaria between 1933 and 1944.

Ilshat Saetov is the author of a book on political marketing in Turkey and Russia (2017), and co-author of a book on Muslim (post-Sufi) Jamaats in Eastern countries (2021). He has edited several books on the Middle East and Near East, as well as the Russian translation of Globalized Islam. The Search for a New Ummah by Olivier Roy.

His current areas of interest include Turkic national minorities and the press, Tatar mythology, auto-ethnography and the impact of cinema on contemporary society.
