Gabriel Doyle est diplômé d’un master en Histoire de l’EHESS en 2015 et d’une bi-licence l’université Paris 1 en Histoire et Sciences Politiques en 2013. Il a commencé en 2016 une thèse sous la direction de Nathalie Clayer dans la mention Histoire.
Sa thèse de doctorat se concentre sur les aspects spatiaux et urbains de la bienfaisance à Istanbul à la fin de l’époque ottomane (fin XIXe-début XXe siècle). Plutôt que d’insérer les activités philanthropiques et missionnaires européennes dans une stratégie diplomatique unidirectionnelle, cette thèse entend entrer dans les milieux locaux et les bâtiments dans lesquels s’opèrent ces activités d’assistance sociale. Trois milieux sont analysés avec une approche microhistorique : celui des « latins » d'Istanbul, celui de la gestion plus générale de la capitale par les autorités ottomanes à travers la bienfaisance et enfin, celui des quartiers en aménagement et de leurs voisinages multiconfessionnels. La thèse cherche ainsi à concilier histoire urbaine et histoire transnationale en contexte ottoman.

Gabriel Doyle has graduated from a Masters in History at the EHESS in 2015 and a double Bachelors in History and Political Science at Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne in 2013. In 2016, he started a PhD under the supervision of Nathalie Clayer.
His thesis concentrates on the urban and spatial aspects of relief in late Ottoman Istanbul (end of the 19^th-beginning of the 20^th centuries). Rather than studying European philanthropy and missionary work through the glens of unidirectional diplomatic strategies, it tries to delve into the local environment and the buildings where this social care takes place. Three milieus are studied with more scrutiny: the world of Istanbul’s « latin » community, the broader urban governance of the city through relief and benevolence and finally, Istanbul’s multiconfessional neighbourhoods under material change. This research thus intends to conceal transnational and urban history in an Ottoman context.
