Diplômée d’un Master en Langues et Histoire culturelle turques à l’Institut National des Langues et des Civilisations Orientales (Inalco) en 2021, Esther Pedarros a passé une année à la Villa Arson (Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Art de Nice) où elle a étudié les arts visuels et la photographie, dans une approche tant théorique que pratique. Désormais étudiante en doctorat pour la mention « Terrains, textes, interdisciplinarité » (2Ti), EstherPedarros propose un sujet de thèse intitulé « Habiter l’héritage ottoman : étude des pratiques de patrimonialisation du style ottoman dans l’habitat, la décoration d’intérieur et le design d’aujourd’hui en Turquie », sous la codirection de Marc Aymes et de Monica Heintz.
La thèse vise à proposer une anthropologie visuelle, historique et comparée des tendances et des pratiques sociales et culturelles liées à l’habitat et au design en Turquie. Il s’agira de s’interroger sur l’influence de la référence politique et idéologique au passé ottoman, telle qu’elle est utilisée par le gouvernement actuel turc, sur les mécanismes de reconfiguration des conceptions de l’habitat et du design au sein de milieux de production et de consommation sociologiquement hétérogènes, y compris parmi des élites ne faisant pas l’objet d’une adhésion au projet politique islamiste au pouvoir. Ainsi, seront réalisées des enquêtes de terrain au sein de milieux spécifiques de conception, fabrication et commercialisation d’espaces intérieurs et de biens matériels liés à l’habitat à Istanbul, Bursa et Konya, trois villes d’Anatolie aujourd’hui reconnues pour la renommée et le prestige de leurs patrimoines ottomans. Il s’agira également de réaliser une ethnographie des espaces intérieurs significatifs du phénomène étudié, et d’interroger les familles particulièrement adeptes de ce nouveau style d’habitat. La dimension historique de cette recherche exigera quant à elle l’exploitation et le traitement d’archives relevant de l’histoire de l’art, de l’habitat, des arts décoratifs et du design en Turquie.

After receiving a Master’s degree in Turkish Languages and Cultural History from France’s National Institute of Oriental Languages and Civilizations (INALCO) in 2021, Esther Pedarros spent a year at Villa Arson (National School of Arts in Nice), where she studied visual arts and photography, both theory and practical. Now a doctoral student for the "Field, texts, interdisciplinarity" (2Ti) mention, Esther Pedarros is proposing a thesis titled "Living the Ottoman heritage: ethnography of the Ottoman style's patrimonialization in contemporary Turkey's housing, interior decoration and design”, under the co-supervision of Marc Aymes and Monica Heintz.
The thesis aims to propose a visual, historical and comparative anthropology of the social and cultural trends and practices related to housing and design in contemporary Turkey. It will question the influence of political and ideological references to the Ottoman past used by the present Turkish government, and the mechanisms of reconfiguration of the different conceptions of housing and design in sociologically heterogeneous production and consumption milieux, including the elites that don't adhere to the Islamist political project in power. Consequently, field surveys will be carried out within specific circles of design, manufacture and marketing of housing, interior spaces and household goods in Istanbul, Bursa and Konya, three renown cities in Anatolia for the prestige of their Ottoman heritage. It will also carry out an ethnographic work of the significant interior spaces of the studied phenomenon and interrogate the families who are particularly fond of this nestyle. The historic dimension of this research will require analyzing and processing archives related to the history of art, housing, decorative arts and design in Turkey.
