After a bachelor's degree in Sociology at the University of Galatasaray, and a master's degree in Political Studies at EHESS in 2017, I defended in 2022 my thesis in a cotutelle programme at EHESS (History and Civilizations) and at the University of Heidelberg (Islamic Studies) entitled “A Conceptual History of the Crisis: Anthropological and Political Writings of the Late Ottoman Empire (1908-1914)”.
The research undertaken in my thesis aims to investigate what the perspective of the history of concepts (Begriffsgeschichte) can bring to the history of reformist thoughts in the late Ottoman Empire. Also aiming to contribute to the understanding of Begriffsgeschichte, as practiced by Reinhart Koselleck, with regard to its relatively less studied hermeneutical aspect, the study provides several readings through the work of Georg F. W. Hegel, Friedrich Schleiermacher, Quentin Skinner and Clifford Geertz, thus reaching its own methodology. The aim of the work is to understand this history from the space of experience and the horizon of expectation of these Ottoman authors, and to decipher the "implicit anthropology" contained in the conception of human being under question. The study focuses thereby on the concepts of humanity (insānīyet - beşerīyet - ādemīyet) as well as civilization and gentleness (medenīyet - teḫẕīb-i aḫlāḳ- ḥilm). As these concepts furthermore include temporal aspects particularly condensed in the concept of progress and crisis, the work focuses on concepts in Ottoman Turkish such as teraḳḳī, inḥiṭāṭ, tedennī, buḥrānand helāk with regard to Koselleck's analyses of similar notions developed by Enlightenment philosophers. Furthermore, the concepts of doubt (ẓann– reyb – şübhe) exist as part of debates about the future of empire and humanity. Finally, the concepts related to empire and imperialism (mülk– cihān-gīrlik) matter for understanding the distance between reality around them and their existential aspirations. There emerges a new narrative based on the theory of the plurality of historical times that challenges linear narratives subordinated to political events. It thus endeavours to reveal semantic complexity of these writings, and the contemporaneity of their conceptual repertoire with that of other intellectual circles around the world.
