Après une thèse sur les principaux marchands caravaniers de l’Asie centrale du Haut Moyen-Âge, les marchands sogdiens, j'ai enseigné pendant onze ans à l’EPHE puis, depuis 2011, à l’EHESS sur une chaire intitulée « Sociétés centre-asiatiques médiévales. Migrations et acculturations ». Je m’intéresse principalement à l’histoire sociale et économique de la région du IVe au IXe siècle de notre ère, que ce soit pour les oasis irrigués ou les terres nomades, à l’est comme à l’ouest des Pamirs. J’ai travaillé en particulier sur les processus d’islamisation, sur l’histoire politique des élites nomades et sur les migrations des Huns et des Sogdiens. Quoique principalement historien, après avoir participé à des fouilles en Ouzbékistan (avec la Mission Archéologique Française en Ouzbékistan) et en Afghanistan (avec la Délégation Archéologique Française en Afghanistan), je fouille actuellement en Mongolie des tombes impériales turques.
After a PhD on the main caravan traders of Central Asia in the Early Middle Ages, the Sogdian traders, I was assistant-professor for eleven years at the EPHE, and since 2011, professor at the EHESS ("Medieval Central Asian Societies. Migrations and acculturations"). I am mainly interested in the social and economic history of Central Asia from the fourth to the ninth century CE, both of the irrigated oases and the nomadic lands, east and west of the Pamirs. I have written especially on the processes of Islamization, on the political history of nomadic elites and on the migrations of the Huns and Sogdians. After excavations in Uzbekistan (with the French Archaeological Mission in Uzbekistan) and in Afghanistan (with the French Archaeological Delegation in Afghanistan), and although I am mainly a historian, I am currently excavating Turkish period imperial tombs in Mongolia.
