Jovana Papovic réalise une thèse en histoire sous la direction de Nathalie Clayer autour de la culture associative dans l’espace yougoslave avant 1941 à travers le cas du mouvement de gymnastique des Sokols. Imaginé à sa création dans les années 1860 comme un club de sociabilité bourgeoise et nationaliste, le Sokol devient dans les années 1930 une organisation de masse quais-étatique, outil de propagande et instrument de contrôle de la population. Initiative polymorphe, elle regroupe une grande variété d’acteurs : idéologues et politiciens, travailleurs sociaux et éducateurs, gymnastes et membres honoraires, adultes et enfants, hommes et femmes, ouvriers et paysans ; et s’y déploient des formes d’engagement plurielles. Ce travail propose d’explorer les différentes modalités de l’engagement associatif à travers une observation à deux échelles : celle « par le haut » de la production et de la diffusion de nouveaux modèles ; et celle « par le bas » de la réception, de l’appropriation et de la réinterprétation de ces initiatives par les individus. Il s’agit là d’enrichir les débats autour l’édification de la nation et de l’État Yougoslave en mettant en lumière la place de l’expérience et de la subjectivité dans sa fabrique culturelle, sociale et politique.
Formée en études culturelles et titulaire d’un Master de sciences sociales de l’EHESS, mention anthropologie, Jovana Papovic a aussi développé des recherches sur les (sous)cultures de jeunes, ainsi que l’engagement politique radical et les mouvements étudiants dans la Serbie contemporaine.
Jovana Papovic is a PhD fellow in history, working under the supervision of Nathalie Clayer. In her doctoral thesis she investigates associative culture in the Yugoslav space before 1941 through the case of the Sokol gymnastics movement. Created in the 1860s as a bourgeois and nationalist sociability club, the Sokol became in the 1930s a quasi-state mass organization, a propaganda tool and an instrument of population control. A polymorphous initiative, it involved a wide variety of actors: ideologues and politicians, social workers and educators, gymnasts and honorary members, adults and children, men and women, workers and peasants; and displayed plural forms of commitment. This research proposes to explore the different modalities of commitment and involvement in a voluntary association through a two-scale observation: the ‘top-down’ dynamic of the production and diffusion of new cultural models; and the ‘bottom-up’ dynamic of the reception, appropriation and reinterpretation of these initiatives on the ground. The main goal is there to enrich the debates around the Yugoslav nation and state building by highlighting the role of experience and subjectivity in its cultural, social and political fabric.
Jovana Papovic holds a Masters in cultural studies and a Masters in anthropology (EHESS), and she has developed research on youth (sub)cultures, youth’s radical political engagement and student movements in contemporary Serbia.
