Hamida AZOUANI-REKKAS est docteure en sociologie politique. Suite à l’obtention d’un master en Sociologie et Anthropologie : Politique, Culture et Migrations, spécialité Migrations et Relations Interethniques (MIRI), elle situe ses recherches au croisement de la sociologie politique, des Études de l’intersectionnalité, de l’anthropologie du christianisme et de l’anthropologie de l’islam.

Intitulée « Devenir "Born Again Christian" en contexte kabyle contemporain : au croisement des représentations locales, des configurations nationales et des dynamiques transnationales », sa thèse est dirigée par Hamit Bozarslan et Karima Dirèche. Elle est soutenue à l’EHESS devant un jury composé de Katia Boissevain (CNRS), Christophe Pons (CNRS), Stéphane Lacroix (FNSP, rapporteur) et Olivier Roy (Institut Universitaire Européen, rapporteur).

Ses recherches portent notamment sur les modalités des identifications individuelles et collectives opérées par la conversion religieuse, les mobilités frontalières et la circularité des biens symboliques. En effet, les nouvelles manifestations du religieux qu’elle observe en Algérie, en France et aux États-Unis, l’amènent à questionner les dynamiques religieuses contemporaines dans les deux perspectives nationale et transnationale.

Hamida AZOUANI-REKKAS is a PhD in political sociology. After obtaining a master's degree in Sociology and Anthropology: Politics, Culture and Migration, specialty Migration and Interethnic Relations (MIRI), she situates her research at the intersection of political sociology, intersectionality studies, the anthropology of Christianity and the anthropology of Islam.

Entitled “Becoming "Born Again Christian" in the Contemporary Kabyle Context: at the Intersection of Local Representations, National Configurations, and Transnational Dynamics,” her thesis is directed by Hamit Bozarslan and Karima Dirèche. It was defended at EHESS before a jury composed of Katia Boissevain (CNRS), Christophe Pons (CNRS), Stéphane Lacroix (FNSP, rapporteur) and Olivier Roy (European University Institute, rapporteur).

His research focuses on the modalities of individual and collective identifications brought about by religious conversion, border mobilities and the circularity of symbolic goods. Indeed, the new manifestations of the religious that she observes in Algeria, France, and the United States, leads her to question contemporary religious dynamics in both national and transnational perspectives.

Devenir "Born Again Christian" en contexte kabyle contemporain : au croisement des représentations locales, des configurations nationales et des dynamiques transnationales

Le sujet de ce travail de recherche porte sur les conversions de l’islam au christianisme évangélique en contexte kabyle dans lequel se développe de manière marquante la mouvance pentecôtiste depuis le début des années 2000. L’expansion du phénomène qui a pris de l’ampleur au fil du temps et son expression dans les zones rurales et urbaines viennent explicitement entraver le discours politique officiel axé sur la cohésion sociale et l’unité nationale dont la promotion repose sur la mise en valeur de l’ancrage historique de l’islam en Algérie. L’État qui, jusqu’ici, travaille à l’élaboration de l’identité collective autour de l’arabité et l’islamité assiste à une véritable prolifération de groupes affichant des appartenances en dehors de son giron. Les nouvelles allégeances semblent relever d’un choix déterminé par un ensemble d’éléments générateurs de représentations sociales périphériques. Pour mener à bien une réflexion sur les modalités d’identification à la périphérie du paysage politico-religieux en contexte local traversé par des dynamiques nationales et transnationales, nous avons privilégié une étude ethnographique longitudinale menée conjointement auprès d’assemblées pentecôtistes en Kabylie et en France. Pour une analyse fouillée au sein de ces espaces étendus, le choix a été ainsi opéré de mobiliser les méthodes de l’ethnographie itinérante. Cette perspective méthodologique permet de repenser l’objet dans les dimensions de plurilocalisation, de transnationalisation et de mobilité des acteurs religieux. Au croisement entre le religieux et le politique, la question des conversions fournit somme toute un cadre d’analyse plus global et transversal. Parce qu’il se révèle vecteur des aspirations en dehors du champ religieux, le processus conversionnel s’accompagne de dynamiques d’individualisation et de profondes restructurations des rapports sociaux. La dimension de renégociation du statut individuel et collectif semble en effet caractériser les conversions en milieu évangélique kabyle, il convient ainsi d’inscrire les interrogations posées ici au cœur des mécanismes inhérents à l’autonomisation du sujet croyant. Il est question d’appréhender des acteurs dont l’action religieuse est mue dans des logiques modernes de quête de sens et d’individualisation, mobilisées comme un dispositif, émanant d’un cheminement et de trajectoires d’identification atypiques, qui participe à la restructuration des rapports à soi, à la « communauté », à la Nation et à la société. Ainsi, bien au-delà du décryptage des modalités de diffusion des valeurs et des croyances évangéliques, l’enjeu de cette thèse consiste non seulement à dégager les reconfigurations individuelles, mais aussi à tenter d’appréhender les stratégies d’énonciation déployées par des acteurs oscillant, au gré des circonstances, entre particularisme identitaire et universalisme religieux en vue de résister au mode de socialisation collective chargée de présupposés idéologiques.

Abstract of my thesis

Becoming a "Born Again Christian" in the Contemporary Kabylian Context: at the Intersection of Local Representations, National Configurations and Transnational Dynamics.

The subject of this research is conversions from Islam to evangelical Christianity in the Kabylian context, where the Pentecostal movement has been developing significantly since the early 2000s. The expansion of the phenomenon, which has grown over time, and its expression in rural and urban areas explicitly hinder the official political discourse based on social cohesion and national unity, the promotion of which is based on the historical roots of Islam in Algeria. The state, which until now has been working on the development of a collective identity around Arabness and Islam, is witnessing a real proliferation of groups displaying allegiances outside its fold. The new allegiances seem to be the result of a choice determined by a set of elements that generate peripheral social representations. In order to carry out a reflection on the modalities of identification with the periphery of the politico-religious landscape in a local context crossed by national and transnational dynamics, we have favoured a longitudinal ethnographic study carried out jointly with Pentecostal assemblies in Kabylia and in France. For an in-depth analysis within these extended spaces, the choice was made to mobilise the methods of itinerant ethnography. This methodological perspective makes it possible to rethink the object in the dimensions of plurilocation, transnationalisation and mobility of religious actors. At the crossroads between the religious and the political, the question of conversions provides a more global and transversal framework for analysis. Because it reveals itself as a vector of aspirations outside the religious field, the conversion process is accompanied by dynamics of individualisation and profound restructuring of social relations. The dimension of renegotiation of individual and collective status seems to characterise conversions in the Kabylian evangelical environment, and it is therefore appropriate to place the questions raised here at the center of the mechanisms inherent in the autonomisation of the believing subject. It is a question of understanding actors whose religious action is driven by modern logics of the quest for meaning and individualisation, mobilised as a device, emanating from a path and trajectories of atypical identification, which participates in the restructuring of relationships to oneself, to the 'community,” to the Nation and to society. Thus, well beyond the deciphering of the modalities of diffusion of evangelical values and beliefs, the stake of this thesis consists not only in identifying individual reconfigurations, but also in trying to apprehend the strategies of enunciation deployed by actors oscillating, according to the circumstances, between identity particularism and religious universalism in order to resist the mode of collective socialization with ideological presuppositions.
