1973-80 études d’islamologie, turcologie, africanologie et d’histoire sociale et économique à l’université de Hambourg
1981 : doctorat sur les réformes locales en Rumélie ottomane avant le début des Tanzimat (recherches dans les archives de Sarajevo, Skopje et Istanbul (1977-78))
1981-84 : assistant au sein de l’Institut de l’histoire et la culture du Proche Orient et Turcologie (Institut für Geschichte und Kultur des Nahen Orients sowie Turkologie) à Munich.
1984-89 : maître de conférences (University Lecturer) en études ottomanes au sein du Centre des études byzantines et du grec moderne (Centre for Byzantine Studies and Modern Greek) à Birmingham (Angleterre). Fondation du département des études ottomanes (depuis 1988, le centre porte le nomCentre des études byzantines, ottomanes et grecques modernes (Centre for Byzantine, Ottoman and Modern Greek Studies). Depuis 1989 : Honorary Research Fellow du centre.
1989-92 : professeur d’Islamologie et de Turcologie au sein du Séminaire orientale de l’université de Fribourg (Allemagne).
Depuis 1992 : professeur d’Islamologie (études ottomanes) au sein du Séminaire des langues et cultures du Proche Orient (Seminar für Sprachen und Kulturen des Vorderen Orients) de l’université de Heidelberg (Allemagne).
2006-2017 : président du CIEPO (Comité international des études pré-ottomanes et ottomanes)

(2) Christian communities (such as individual Catholic monasteries but also autonomous districts and cities) under Ottoman rule

(4) research on Ottoman holdings from several Franciscan monasteries in Bosnia and Croatia from a variety of perspectives, partly guided by the specific interest expressed by the Franciscans of Bosna Argentina and published in BOSNA FRANCISCANA (Sarajevo)

The Project is an initiative of the “Centre for Research on the Dalmatino-Bosnian Borderlands during the Ottoman Period (CLEUNE)” housed at the Franciscan Monastery and Art Gallery Gorica, Livno.
The aims of the Project are threefold:
(1) making available to CLEUNE researchers translations of Ottoman archival documents from the major Franciscan monasteries of the region, in particular Gorica (Livno) and Fojnica;
(2) preserving on electronic media the complete holdings of Ottoman documents in the named monasteries as a precautionary measure against damage or loss;
(3) following the example of other institutions by producing digital copies with the aim of limiting the exposure of the originals to damage by handling
The Project’s initial focus is the digitization of the c. 250 original Ottoman documents in Gorica (Livno) and of the c. 3,000 original Ottoman documents housed in Fojnica monastery and the ca. 4,500 Ottoman documents in Kraljeva Sutjeska monastery. Later on, a project is envisaged entitled “Making their Voices Heard. Monks, Peasants and Townspeople in Central-Western Bosnia under Ottoman Rule – Stratagems, Narratives and Formats of Arzuhal in their Quest for Justice”.
