Diplômée de l'Université Jean Moulin de Lyon 3 avec un Master en sciences des sociétés et des religions, Irem Erturk est actuellement étudiante en doctorat dans le cursus « Textes, Terrains et Interdisciplinarité ».
Issue d’une formation pluridisciplinaire, elle est titulaire d'une Licence en relations internationales à l'Université Bilkent (Turquie) et en droit international à l'Université de Turku (Finlande). Elle a obtenu son premier Master en études de l'Union européenne contemporaine à l'Université du Sussex (Angleterre) où elle a travaillé sur le processus de démocratisation de l'Union européenne. Après avoir travaillé pendant de nombreuses années dans le secteur du numérique, elle a décidé de reprendre le chemin de l'académie.
Suite à son deuxième diplôme de licence en sciences politiques à l'Université de Paris 1 - Panthéon Sorbonne, elle a obtenu son deuxième master dans le parcours d’histoire axé sur l’Islam. Dans son mémoire, elle s'est intéressée aux caractéristiques de la formation des Jeunes Ottomans pendant la période de juin 1865 à juin 1867. Parmi ces derniers, Ali Suavi s’étant distingué par son trait particulier en tant qu’ouléma prêchant dans les mosquées, dans son présent projet, Irem continue d'étudier l'histoire intellectuelle des oulémas ottomans du XIX^e siècle.
Ainsi, le regard d’Irem porte sur le positionnement politique des oulémas par rapport aux réformes modernes que sur l’évolution de leur compréhension de l'Islam tout au long du XIX^esiècle.

Graduated with a Master's degree in History from the University Jean Moulin, Lyon 3, Irem Erturk is currently a PhD student in "Texts, Terrains, Interdisciplinarity", in the framework of a co-direction between EHESS and the École Pratique des Hautes Études - Université PSL, and under the supervision of Rachida Chih and Özgür Türesay.
She has completed a multidisciplinary training in International Relations at Bilkent University, Turkey, and International Law at the University of Turku, Finland. She obtained her first Master's degree in Contemporary European Union Studies at the University of Sussex, England; where she conducted research on the democratization process of the European Union. After working for many years in the digital sector, decided to return to the academy, in 2018 she obtained her second undergraduate degree in political science at the University of Paris 1 - Panthéon Sorbonne.  In 2022, at the University Jean Moulin, Lyon, she received her second master's degree in Sciences of Societies and Religions, majoring in Islamic Studies. In her dissertation, she focused on the characteristics of the formation of the Young Ottomans during the period from June 1865 to June 1867.  As Ali Suavi stood out among them as a mosque-preaching ulema, her doctoral project continues studying the writings of Ali Suavi and nineteenth-century ottoman ulemas. In her study, she focuses not only on the positions of the ulemas in relation to modern reforms, but also on their perception of Islam in the 19th century.
