Marilyn Booth

Marilyn Booth is Khalid bin Abdallah Al Saud Professor for the Study of the Contemporary Arab World, Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, and Magdalen College, Oxford. She was research fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton (2018); l’Institut d’Études Avancées, Paris (2022); and the Neubauer Collegium, University of Chicago (2022). Booth’s research focuses on nineteenth-century Arabophone women’s writing, ideologies of gender and history of feminisms; on historical translation (Arabic/French); and on the history of modern ‘conduct literature’ (etiquette books to household manuals to novels) in Arabic. Her most recent monographs are The Career and Communities of Zaynab Fawwaz: Feminist Thinking in Fin-de-siècle Egypt (2021) and Classes of Ladies of Cloistered Spaces: Writing Feminist History through Biography in Fin-de-siècle Egypt (2015). She has translated many works of fiction from the Arabic and was co-winner of the 2019 Man Booker International Prize for her translation of Jokha Alharthi’s Celestial Bodies.
